The morning after: the Hubble telescope wakes up from its “hibernation”

NASA’s Hubble Telescope has been napping for a month since the system failure in late October. However, the agency announced yesterday morning that it is Wake up Hubble. According to NASA, the telescope will now function as usual, with all four active instruments collecting data.

On October 23, NASA first noticed that Hubble’s instruments were not receiving messages from the telescope’s control unit. NASA eventually put the telescope into some sort of safe mode while trying to figure out what happened. Due to the sensitivity of the Hubble hardware, it will take a long time to exit this Safe Mode. Rapid changes in current or temperature are not good for service life. The telescope is now 31 years old – Hubble may be nearing the end of its useful life in space. NASA will use the telescope until the end, however, and plans to use it in conjunction with the Webb telescope, which is expected to finally launch on December 22nd.

The company is testing premium memberships with a small group of users.

Discord has started testing a feature called Premium Memberships. The tool enables community owners to access part or all of the server for a monthly subscription fee.

To date, people looking to offer membership fees or paid access have had to turn to third-party services like Patreon to monetize access to their servers.

The Premium Membership Tool creates a streamlined user interface for this purpose. A new tab under the heading Community in the settings menu of the app enables server owners, for example, to set price levels and view related analyzes. The feature similarly streamlines the paid channel registration process for users. If you want to fund a community, you don’t have to leave Discord to do so now.

In 2019, more than 3,100 people died in accidents involving distracted drivers in the United States.

According to a report in the New York Times, many Tesla vehicles allow the driver to play a variety of games on the infotainment system while driving. The company released an update this summer allegedly allowing drivers to play Solitaire, the jet fighter game Sky Force Reloaded, and the strategy title The Battle of Polytopia on the go.

The touchscreen is designed to display a warning before a game of solitaire begins. “Solitaire is a game for everyone, but playing while driving is only for the passengers,” the Times said. That indicates that Tesla knows the game is playable while the car is driving. In August, the NHTSA announced that it was investigating autopilot after a series of accidents involving parked first-aid vehicles. This resulted in one death and 17 injuries.

BMW

BMW and esports brand LVL are trying something like Rocket League. They work together on Das Race Goal, a rocket league style esports platform where remote-controlled cars play football for charity. Players worldwide will control the vehicles in a real arena while they grab virtual powerups and activate “special effects”.

The first event will take place on December 12th at 1:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on LVL’s Twitch channel. In this first competition, six teams of three compete against each other in the BMW Welt in Munich to raise awareness and raise funds for the Skills for Life programs of the United Nations Population Fund.

Adam McKay and Jennifer Lawrence team up again on Bad Blood.

Apple will fund and distribute the long-in-the-making film about the embattled Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Bad Blood will play Jennifer Lawrence as Holmes, while Adam McKay will write and direct. Both are producers of the project, which is a co-production between Apple Studios and Legendary.

Based on the book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Start Up by former Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou, the film has been in development since at least 2016.

Bad Blood won’t be the only film and television project about Theranos and Holmes. In 2019, Hulu lit up a mini-series with “Saturday Night Live” star Kate McKinnon that is supposed to play Holmes. She left earlier this year and was replaced by Amanda Seyfried. An HBO documentary about the Theranos saga also premiered in 2019.
