Omni Remotes this week introduced its new “perpetual” solar-powered remote control in the form of the Model P, which offers an alternative to battery-powered remote controls. The model P universal remote does not require battery changes or recharging throughout its life, can use solar power, and was developed as part of the “Omni Greenovation” program, a comprehensive sustainability drive that includes the implementation of ink-free manufacturing processes, recycled and marine-bound plastics and adoption of paper-based packaging.
Solar powered remote control
“The Model P uses Omni’s low-power hardware platform and supports standard voice commands as well as Bluetooth and infrared keystrokes, while using virtually no power in standby mode. In conjunction with advances in solar harvesting, the Model P can be operated essentially continuously with 8 hours of indoor lighting per day. Even in complete darkness, the built-in power reserves can withstand 4 months with regular use.
The P model was developed without a battery compartment or charging port and is only 10 mm thick. The solar panel blends seamlessly with the rest of the remote control and defies the functional look of traditional solar devices. It is currently offered to leading pay TV operators and is compatible with Android TV, RDK and other common set-top box systems. “
