The government of Kosovo stopped crypto mining in the country due to power restrictions during the winter season.
The Kosovar Minister of Economic Affairs, Artane Rizvanolli, decided to stop crypto mining following a recommendation by the Technical Committee for “Emergency Measures for the Energy Supply” report from the local Gazeta Express point of sale.
The report notes that the government took the decision after Kosovo’s electricity supply fell below mandatory levels and began to impose electricity cuts during peak periods.
According to Rizvanolli, the government has decided to set up a technical committee to evaluate the emergency power supply strategies in response to the situation. Based on the committee’s recommendations last week, the government decided to take immediate action, including stopping crypto mining on Kosovo’s borders.
The report noted that law enforcement agencies will step in to stop the production of cryptocurrencies and work to identify places where such operations are taking place. The minister said:
“These measures aim to address a potential unexpected or long-term shortage of power generation, transmission or distribution capacity in order to overcome the energy crisis without further burdening the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.”
As a result of low domestic production and exorbitant energy import fees, the Kosovar energy distributor has KEDS announced that on December 22nd, power outages would be introduced across the country. Bitcoin mining has been known to use a lot of electricity, with one recently report claims that Bitcoin uses eight times more energy than Google and Facebook combined.
In the past few months, several nations have raised concerns about mining-related power outages, including Iran and Kazakhstan.
