Meta’s Reality Labs unit is rolling out one final major software update for Quest and Quest 2 before the end of the year. And it’s one that you’ll want to download asap as it adds some handy features.
You can use either of these to record yourself in a game or app. If you own a VR headset, you’ve probably seen videos like the one above where you can see how a game physically goes. You used to need special equipment to capture footage from this mixed reality perspective. With the new update, you can use your phone instead.

Of course, the end result isn’t as polished as the video above, but you can still get an idea of how games like Beat Saber play in the real world. You need an iPhone XS or higher with iOS 11 or higher to use the new mobile mixed reality camera. As of today’s release, about a dozen games support the feature, including Superhot VR, Pistol Whip, and Synth Riders.
The update also includes a number of features that Meta “soon” announced at its Connect conference in late October. First of all, you can now make voice calls through the Messenger app on Quest and Quest 2 headsets. With this feature, you can not only call other Quest users but also call your Facebook friends.
Reality labs
Starting today, you can also save your saved data to the cloud for some games. The feature may not be immediately available on your headset after downloading the update. That’s because Reality Labs says it’s rolling out more slowly to make sure it’s working properly. In addition, it is a developer opt-in, so every game may not support it, even if it is generally available. While this isn’t new to the Quest platform, today’s update also removes the experimental tag that was applied to the multi-user and app sharing features introduced earlier this year.
Finally, although not directly linked to today’s update, Reality Labs plans to introduce new customization options for Horizon workrooms in the “coming weeks”. To begin with, you have the option of choosing from several virtual office environments and decorating the room with custom posters and your company logo.
